DISCOVER THE ISSUES

Press, Media, and Social Media

Less than 60% of eligible voters voted in the 2016 elections —and less than 43% of young people under age 25. The 2014 midterm elections had the lowest turnout in 75 years, since the start of World War I when many were fighting overseas and unable to vote. In this Forum, Fellows explored the evolution of voting rights–and voting fights, the current context of voting, and the biggest threats to casting votes that matter. We examined the Electoral College and the pros and cons of direct vs indirect democracy. We delved into gerrymandering, the upcoming Supreme Court case (Gill vs. Whitford), and the stakes at play. And, of course, we discussed the role that education and voter education play in all of this.
